"It's hard to make a formal complaint for a classroom mock trial." Thanatos gives up his search in the textbooks and closes it with a satisfying snap. "If the university specialized in law, I could see if another class also acted the same, but that's not an option."
He frowns. "Is it really that important to question? It seems the usual to me."
"Yeah? Can't say somethin' abou' th' teacher or somethin'? ...Dang."
Katsuya blinks. "Errr...I dunno, just seemed weird? Th's th' first time I've heard 'f it, and like...I haven't ev'n seen that stuff while passin' legal drama flippin channels, it feels like somethin' they'd snatch up y'know?" So weird...
"The legal dramas are hardly factual. We've had assignments where we needed to analyze an episode and point out what was wrong. Another time we had to provide a better argument than the lead." Most of the time, the error was completely based on something wrong with procedure. Someone didn't fill out the right forms or follow the right codes. Or they got access to something that was way above their jurisdiction or out of their domain.
"Oh, you heard about that? The parrot had memorized a name and a safe combination which could both be linked to another infamous case."
CACKLES im so glad we're here with ace attorney, death,
"It's one of the required case studies to learn because it set a new precedent on what is acceptable in the court of law." Thanatos returns to the textbook, and this time, it's easy to pull up a mention of the case. There's a photo of the parrot on the stand and everything.
"It couldn't swear to tell the truth for a testimony, but it managed to be living evidence in a sense." And that managed to blur the line between evidence and testimony for better or ill. "The precedent became important in another case involving a step-ladder. Or was it a step-ladder...?"
"The murder weapon was a sabotaged step-ladder. However, victim's pet raven would only say the word 'ladder.' It became highly contested if the raven meant the same step-ladder or another ladder."
Lawyers have surprisingly strong opinions on ladders vs. step-ladders.
"The prosecution argued that since there were two ladders on the crime scene, one of each kind, it was important the testimony be specific. All testimony involving the raven had to be thrown out. The defense argued that even if which ladder wasn't specified, it didn't automatically eliminate the rest of the testimony." It became even more frustrating for the judge because....
"Then the whole thing got declared a mistrial because someone revealed the evidence had been tampered with in the first place."
Thanatos gives a solemn nod. Court is no easy matter, and it's why there can be very long waits to have one's case heard. And then the judge spends so little time with each case because there is such a backlog.
"If I can give you some advice... avoid being in court as much as you can. It's a long process."
"Now that I've gotten you thoroughly afraid of the court system, maybe I should take my leave before I tell you more horror stories." Thanatos doesn't know why he says that, just that there's a compulsion to do so.
He probably doesn't want to scare him any more than he already has. Yes, that's it.
And honestly, he can't help but agree. Even if it's a strange reason- if not an unconsciously false one- Katsuya himself, certainly, doesn't really look forward to more horror stories.
This is just too much nonsense in the court room, and also, he doesn't want to think about how he'd end up in one anyway.
"Hih-! Yeah- er! Not tha' it wasn't cool t' talk about I mean, jus'-" Quick, salvage it! "...Y' probably have stuff t' do, huh."
"There's a lot to study, and I have a test soon." The words are easily out of his mouth. That's right. His test. Ugh... he can't fall behind on studying. "I better grab some coffee before hitting the books again. Nice talking with you."
Thanatos begins to walk away with a slight wave of his hand.
